Get A Clue! I don't have a real defined subject for this week's editorial, so I'm just going to pop off about some random issues.
Warner Brothers:
Get off of this $14.98 "crap-o-rama" kick. Look, I'm all for lower prices, but I'm not going to sacrifice quality, for a lower price. By the way, why are you issuing pan and scan edition of films that already have widescreen masters? See Fearless, Grumpy Old Men, Michael , et all. You could have done widescreen editions, but the "average" consumer prefers pan and scan? Note, most DVD consumers aren't average and understand what widescreen is. You do earn some bonus points for releasing Babylon 5, V and V: The Final Battle on LD, that will appease me for a while.
Paramount:
One comment. SHOGUN! The full mini-series on LD or DVD. That two hour butchery from the late 80's is a joke.
Buena Vista:
Release more Dolby Digital 5.1 re-mixes. While your at it, appease every other DVD nut by starting to release you titles in anamorphic widescreen. Personally, I don't care about it right now. When I buy a widescreen TV, I probably will. As for Laser Disc issues, where the *%$@ is a Bug's Life? Mulan and Black Cauldron (LB) would be appreciated some time soon also.
Col/Tri:
No gripes, except for two titles. Hudson Hawk and Flatliners were both Cinema Digital releases, so why weren't they re-mixed in 5.1? Stupid.
Universal:
Go back and re-issue all the titles you've screwed up. Timecop and Sudden Death were 2:35 widescreen for crying out loud. Why haven't you recalled The Hard Way yet? An audio sync error is a defect, and it should have been corrected by now.
DTS/Speilberg:
Give it up. I work at a home theater retailer, and we received our DTS value club order forms last Thursday (4/8/99). While I know Image wants to clear out inventory, it tells me that you guys need the money or something. Image has already told us that certain titles have run out during this sale. These discs will back ordered at regular cost, and sent to us when re-pressed. Yeah, right, what represses? Come clean with the consumers you've suckered. Admit your mistakes, again, and get out of the home video market. That, or you could prove all of you detractors wrong, by actually getting more than 6 titles out in a month.
Consumers:
Get over it. The big titles you want will show up. There isn't a big conspiracy to keep Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and the like, out of you hands. Oh wait, maybe Jurassic Park (See DTS/Speilberg).
Well, that's it for this week. Hopefully, I be able to get into the habit of doing my editorials weekly. Have fun, and keep supporting high end video formats.
